Reel Alaskan Meal - $14.25

Close Up

This is a review of a new Asian restaurant that opened up about two weeks ago in Durham, North Carolina called Sushiōki. They are located in the Park West Crossing Shopping Center on the right side. They are open from 11 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday and they are closed on Sundays. I visited today, Tuesday, around 3 pm. I was the only customer at that time. I was greeted at the register immediately and I ordered the Reel Alaskan Meal without the pickled onion and pickled daikon since I can't eat anything pickled. I made it a meal and chose the wasabi chips and a Diet Pepsi. The other chip choices are original, BBQ and cinnamon and sugar. Their menu is very simple, there are only seven sushi rolls to chose from. They are wrapped, so they can be eaten just like a sandwich. It's like a giant sushi roll cut in half. These are the seven choices:
  1. Southern Sushi - hickory smoked pork BBQ, creamy slaw, pork rinds and gochujang sauce for $9.75
  2. Bull City Bulgogi - Korean beef BBQ, kimchi slaw, picked daikon and boom sauce for $9.75
  3. Titan Tempur - tempura shrimp, butter lettuce, pickled cucumber, shredded carrots and sweet chili Thai sauce for $10.75
  4. Reel Alaskan - spicy sriracha marinated salmon, butter lettuce, tobiko, pickled red onion and pickled daikon for $11.75
  5. RD Yoo - Poké marinated tuna, butter lettuce, picked red onion, cucumber and cucumber wasabi sauce for $10.75
  6. Oh My Gahshi - twice fried chicken thighs, butter lettuce, pickled cucumbers, kimchi slaw and gochujang sauce for $8.75
  7. Veggie Bender - exotic mushroom blend, butter lettuce, charred cabbage, shredded carrots, pickled red onion and green onion jam for $8.75
Any of them can be placed in a bowl over rice or greens instead, if you don't want it make into a wrap. Rice chips cost $1.75, soft drinks or tea are $1.75, a kids meal is $5.75 and you can make it a meal by adding chips and drink for $2.50. The kids meal is fried chicken thighs, rice, toasted seaweed and a juice box. Drinks are self serve.

My order was made right away and it took only five minutes to be delivered to my table. I wasn't sure I would like the wasabi chips, but they were awesome! They are like wonton crisps, but much thiner and sprinkled with seasoning. They are very lightly seasoned, so don't be afraid that they will be too spicy for you. I absolutely love them, yum! They aren't greasy at all and perfectly crisp. The wrap was full of salmon so much so that almost every bite had some salmon which was my concern before giving it a try. I didn't find it spicy, it had a light amount of sriracha. The rice was perfectly cooked and tasty. It was so delicious that I was sad when I had my last bite. I would like to return to try some other versions, perhaps I'll try the tuna one next and I'll order an extra side of chips since they are so tasty.

I really enjoyed my meal and on my way out the young man came out from the back to say goodbye. He was very friendly and made my visit that much more enjoyable. I recommend that you give this fast food Asian restaurant a try very soon. What's your favorite Asian restaurant in the area?
